August 10th, however, would provide an unexpected bend in the road. In my impatience to reach something on an upper cabinet shelf in my kitchen, I ignored the step stool and attempted to support my weight on a lower shelf with full body extension and reach. Now in my prior home in California, this was a common practice of mine. Shelves were securely nailed on wooden rails and never shifted or budged. Not so for my new home. The tiniest of shelf pegs were all that supported this shelf and sadly, not designed to support my body weight, regardless of the fact that I skipped ice cream the night before and had gone for a run early in the morning. 🙂
So how does all of this tie into a DEXA scan and my deep dive into bone health? Remember my praise for small-town medical facilities? Once the bones in my foot healed, my orthopedic surgeon scheduled me for my first DEXA bone density scan. Take a deep breath now. My doctor ordered it on a Tuesday, the nurse called me the following day to schedule my appointment, and I was getting my DEXA scan on Thursday, with results being sent to me electronically the same day. As for the results? Tune in for Part 2 of Bone Health.
